Explore the Universe: Safely

The Internet is vast and scary. Some websites are helpful, some unhelpful and some outright dangerous, particularly for children. That is why your child needs a guide to protect them from harmful content. As they grow and mature, under your watchful eyes, they can be allowed to explore more and more of the internet universe. While we recommend enrichment activities OFFLINE for children to explore sports, hobbies and interests, there is a lot to explore online as well. The LaunchPad provides two Exploration Modes with site restrictions based on the age and value of the site to your child - Exploration Desktop and Guided Exploration.

Online Exploration can lead to future careers

The two modes, Guided Exploration and Exploration Desktop, share the same parental control settings and usage time ranges and limits. We recommend allocating time for exploration after schoolwork is done and before Entertainment is enabled. These modes were created because children today have not been given a safe way to use a computer to explore potential hobbies, interests and careers without the temptation of videogaming, mindless video watching or spending hours on social media.

Guided Exploration (shown above) is a curated list of sites organized by interests. While the user is able to watch videos, including YouTube videos embedded on these sites, the user cannot go to YouTube or other sites that are not a part of the approved list.

In addition to sites approved by Sentinel Computers and our Parent Advisory Council, parents can add up to 8 Custom sites based on their own recommendations for their child’s online adventure.

Exploration Desktop provides a computer desktop environment to pursue interests and not get swept away by mindless entertainment. This mode allows access to some applications not generally allowed in Education modes.,
